Experienced Slitter Operators – Decatur, AL

POSITION SUMMARY: The slitter operator is responsible for processing, in-process inspection, directing support personnel, and coordinating requirements with plant management.


  • Operates steel slitting line.
  • Follows the machine orders per production schedule.
  • Directs associated support personnel.
  • Provides steel samples as needed.
  • Trains slitter helper/slitter set up person to function as an operator.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:  Employees are standing/walking 100% of time; climbs stairs to operator’s stand as needed; lifting up to 50 lbs. as needed;  reading charts, tags and written procedures; printing or writing legibly to complete all required paperwork; measuring material as required.

METHODS, TECHNIQUES, PROCEDURES:  Follows Standard Operating Procedures as outlined in the Training Matrix.

EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS:  This person must be able to operates Slitters, use a band breaker, pneumatic bander/crimper, hand bander, hand cutters, staple gun, electric shears and nibblers. Jib crane, micrometer, calipers, pneumatic impact wrench, tape measure, calculator, ID/OD calculator wheel, Rockwell machine.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  This work site is in the plant.  The plant is on one level, accessible directly from the parking lot.  There are stairs in the rail pit and up to the slitter platforms.  There are short ladders on the banding lines to climb from the floor to the conveyor.  There are seasonal variations in temperatures from 60 to 100+ degrees; some exposure to diesel fumes as trucks move through the plant; noise level varies depending on number of machines in operation.  Potential hazards include strains, cuts, and crush injuries.  Operator must be able to visually observe steel for defects and visually scan the entire length of the machine  to ensure the safety of self and others.
